Warts – Types, Causes & Treatment

Warts are a common skin problem in both children and adults. Warts are nothing but superficial growths on the skin which are generally harmless. Warts can be in different shapes or sizes and appear mostly on knees, feet, face, fingers, elbows, and scalp. They last for years and disappear spontaneously but can come again.

What Causes Warts?

The main cause of warts is a viral infection of the skin. One of the types of types of human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause. Warts are contagious. You can get them from others through broken skin.

Types of Warts :

  1. Common Warts – They commonly grow on hands, but can grow anywhere. They are rough and grayer than the skin around it.
  2. Flat Warts – Flat, small and skin-colored, appear in large numbers on face, neck, knees, hands, and wrists.
  3. Plantar Warts – These are painful warts that grow on soles of feet. They grow into the skin, unlike other warts. They appear as a hole in the feet surrounded by hard skin.
  4. Filiform Warts – These look like tiny threads of skin. They are skin colored and appear around the mouth and nose and near the eyelids.
  5. Periungual Warts – These grow around the nails in clusters.
  6. Genital Warts – These appear around the genitals. While warts growing on the hand and feet are harmless, warts growing in and around the genitals can cause cervical cancer.

Treatment Of Warts:

Warts are harmless but they make you feel ugly. Clinical studies have concluded that tropical treatment of salicylic acid and Cryotherapy (use of low temperatures in medical therapy) is effective in removal of warts. Some people use Duct tapes to treat warts. They cover warts with a small piece of duct tape for several days. Doctors freeze the warts with liquid nitrogen. This treatment lifts the wart away in a week.

If the warts are large and uncomfortable, surgery may be recommended. The warts will be cut with a surgical knife or burnt with electricity by doctors.

There are a few home remedies for removing warts. But before using them a few words of caution:

  • Don’t use it on sensitive parts of the body like face etc.
  • Don’t try them on your feet if you have diabetes, please see the doctor in this case.
  • Don’t try them if the wart is painful and/or bleeding.

The Home Remedies:

  1. Potato: Cut and rub raw potatoes on the affected area several times daily. Do this at least for two weeks.
  2. Castor Oil: Apply castor oil generously on the warts at night. Continue applying for a few months.
  3. Onion: Rub cut onions on the affected area. They are very effective in removing warts.
  4. Figs: Fresh juice of figs should be applied several times a day for two weeks. This a very valuable remedy for warts.
  5. Dandelion: Cut the stem of the dandelion and apply the milk oozing out from the cut end on the warts. Apply it two to three times daily.
  6. Marigold: Juice of the leaves of the marigold plant should be applied on the warts. The sap from the stem is also beneficial in removal of warts.
  7. Papaya: Application of papaya juice is also beneficial.
  8. Pineapple: Pineapple juice is also proved beneficial if applied externally on the warts.
  9. Chalk: Grind the chalk and mix the powder with water. Apply this mixture on the warts.

Along with home remedies, proper diet also helps in the treatment of warts. Take a well-balanced diet of seeds, nuts, grains, fruits, and vegetables. Increase the quantity of fruit in the diet. Eat lots of juicy fruits like grapes, oranges, apples, pineapples, mangoes, papaya, and pear. We hope that this information on warts was helpful.
